Spencer obtained his BSc. (‘87) & MSc (‘90) in Zoology from the University of Guelph and his PhD ('94) in Biochemistry-Molecular Biology from Dalhousie University. He then returned to the University of Guelph to complete a DVM (‘99) at the Ontario Veterinary College.
Spencer’s research interests are, (1) Host-pathogen interactions, applying the tools of molecular biology and biochemistry to understand the pathogenesis of disease in crustaceans and many non-crustaceans as well! This research aims to provide some insight into how pathogens cause disease in crustaceans (and non-crustaceans too!) and to develop more sensitive and specific methods of pathogen detection for the management of disease in wild and harvested stocks. Current crustacean projects are: Gaffkemia proteomics (the bacterium Aerococcus viridans var. homari), Bumper car genomics (the ciliate, Anophryoides haemophila), Paramoeba molecular characterization (the amoeba, Neoparamoeba pemaquidensis) and White Spot Syndrome Virus. (2) The Gene Discovery component of the Atlantic Lobster Moult and Quality Project, which uses genomic approaches to identify molecular markers associated with the moult and reproductive cycles and also the lobsters immune system via the construction of cDNA libraries and EST database mining, PCR (standard and RT-Q-PCR) and microarrays. (3) Lobster Welfare-Humane Treatment, exploring issues from ocean to plate.
