Rachael received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with a minor in Anthropology, from McMaster University (2002). She completed a Master of Science degree (2004) at McMaster in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. Her graduate research focused on x-ray crystallographic structure determination of bacterial enzymes in complex with inhibitors. Rachael joined the Lobster Science Centre in September 2004 and initially performed research on the isolation of antimicrobial peptides from lobster haemolymph and characterisation of proteins expressed during the acute phase response. As part of this project, she designed an ELISA for the measurement of a putative acute phase protein in lobster plasma. Rachael is currently establishing total lipid and glycogen analysis assays for lobster tissue, as a measure of nutritional status. Future research will include identification of proteins found in mature lobster ovaries and development of an ELISA to measure their abundance.
