Byron was born and raised in scenic Codroy Valley, Newfoundland. He attended Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (MUN), Corner Brook, NL, in 1995 for his first year university studies then went on to complete his BSc (Hons) Cell/Microbiology degree at the St. John’s campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland. As an undergrad he completed an Immunology honors thesis working on HIV research within the Immunology department at the hospital’s Health Sciences Centre. He was awarded his undergraduate degree in May of 2000. His professional experience includes working as a Molecular Biologist for five years within the DNA Sequencing Laboratory at the Institute for Marine Biosciences (National Research Council of Canada) in Halifax, NS which was later privatized and became Genome Atlantic where he continued to work for another two years. He then took a contract position as a Senior Research Scientist within Ocean Nutrition Canada in Dartmouth, NS working towards the large scale microbial production of Omega-3 fatty acids as a food additive. In June of 2008 he then moved to Charlottetown, PE to work as a vaccine production technician for the AquaHealth division of Novartis Animal Health Canada. He joined the AVC Lobster Science Centre in September of 2009 and is currently working as a Research Technician on the Bitter Crab Disease (BCD) project. |
