Biochemistry Profiles

AVC Contact: Andrea Battison, AVCLSC

It is possible to detect tissue (e.g., muscle, liver) injury by measuring the activity of tissue-specific  enzymes (specialised proteins) in the blood.  The enzymes are released from the tissues (organs such as muscle, liver) into the blood when the tissue is damaged.  The initial project identified the tissue distribution of a range of enzymes.  Biochemistry profiles are also a component of the Atlantic Lobster Moult and Quality (ALMQ) project where we will be establishing reference ranges for both enzymes and other metabolites and electrolytes in lobster hemolymph during the year
and looking for changes that may be indicators of reproductive, nutritional, status or moult stage.
